Vascular Surgery

Vascular Surgery is amongst the newer super specialities of surgery and is an independent surgical discipline, different from Cardiac or Thoracic Surgery which are separate disciplines themselves.

Vascular Surgery deals with the blood vessels both arteries and veins all over the body except the Heart, Coronary & Pulmonary vessels, and the intracranial blood vessels.

Conventional Vascular Surgery involves :

  • Ligation of sapheno-femoral &sapheno-popliteal junctions with stripping of either or both long & short saphenous veins with multiple avulsions for Varicose Veins. Sub fascial ligation of perforators. Almost obsolete, substituted by laser/ radio frequency ablation.

  • Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms using interposition grafts, EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair) in selective patients with significant co-morbidities and other factors which mandates choice of procedure.

  • Embolectomies&Endarterectomies primarily of Carotids( Main Arteries to Brain for Stroke prevention surgery), Iliac & Common femoral, Brachial &Axillary arteries (to restore blood supply to limbs).

  • Ligation of Popliteal Aneurysms with Femoro–distal bypass

  • Endovascular balloon dilation and stenting for multiple vaso-occlusive disorders.

  • Femoro-distal, ileo-femoral, axillo-femoral bypasses for vaso-occlusive disorders.

  • Recent Trends in Vascular Surgerywhich is new discipline combining open surgery with vascular intervention includes :

  • Endo Venous Ablation using either Laser or Radiofrequency for the treatment of Varicose Veins & Chronic Venous Insufficiency Syndrome under LA.

  • Hybrid/ Endovascular Repairs of Aneurysms.

  • Hybrid Endovascular Revascularisation of Multiple Peripheral Arterial Diseases & Occlusions not amenable by extra anatomical bye pass procedures.

  • Carotid Stenting or awake Carotid Endarterectomy for Stroke prevention.

  • Endovascular embolisations to stop bleeding or prevent bleeding from aneurysms or vascular malformations also to reduce blood supply of tumors to facilitate surgery.

  • Staged Endovascular/ Open management of Vascular Malformations.

  • Management of Diabetic Foot with restoration of blood supply in ischemic feet.
